Modified Ventures
Modified Ventures is a post-internet market development company that builds communities around emerging industries, supported with events, web content and research.
Our main projects are Geoweb Forum, Design for Manufacturing Forum and Social Retail Forum, each with semi-annual Summits at Dumbo Spot in Brooklyn, New York.
Carlos Cruz 'more of a practical designer'
Digital fabrication specialist Carlos Cruz has worked for companies from medical device maker BD to Stratasys. He now mentors students at SVA's new Visible Futures Lab. 'Being a good designer means being well-round, balancing creativity and execution,' Cruz says.
'The barrier to entry has been removed'
Industrial designer Aaron Trocola combines 3D scanning and printing to create products that fit the human body. He also teaches classes on the technology. 'There is a lot of hype out there and I try to deflate that.'
NYC wants to 'bring back the real world of manufacturing'
NYCEDC yesterday launched their Next Top Makers competition at the 3DEA store. 'The challenge is how do we bring on the next generation of manufacturers to come to the city, grow their businesses and find a way to do that in a financially viable way,' says Miquela Craytor, NYCEDC's director of industrial initiatives.
Manufacturing domestically ‘much less of a hassle’
Maker’s Row connects designers with American manufacturers. The company grew out of co-founder Matt Burnett‘s experiences at his own watch brand Steel Cake.
'Value of design not fully recognized in corporate world'
Technological change calls for a refocus in industrial design thinking. ‘What you do in the initial product development process, 80 percent of the cost is being decided upon in that first 20 percent,’ says Stephan Clambaneva, global PLM consultant for Dassault Systèmes and IDSA‘s Northeast VP.
Zahn Center opens to help hardware startups
New York City College is launching a new hardware startup incubator. 'There are a lot of resources available for digital media startups, but there is very little for startups that actually build products,' says Haytham Elhawary, the Zahn Center's new director.
'You can get anything made in New York City'
Bringing design and manufacturing together 'really speeds up the cycle of innovation' says Pratt Center Director Adam Friedman.
